An Investigation of Gender Discrimination in Labor Hiring

Sexual discrimination in labor hiring was measured using a controlled experimental approach. Carefully-matched pairs of written applications were made in response to advertised job vacancies in the Australian State of Victoria. Statistically significant discrimination against females was detected in two of the seven occupations tested. They were gardener and computer analyst programmer. The applicants who encountered discrimination would have been unaware, and unable to demonstrate, that sex had been used as a screening criterion in selection for interview. Such evidence supports Bergmann's advocacy of attacking discrimination by switching from a complaint-based strategy to an investigative one.Discrimination; Female; Gender; Screening

The Textbook Selection Process: An Empirical Study of Faculty Choice Criteria

Textbooks have been largely ignored in recent examinations of the marketing of higher education. This study finds that the faculty member are largely satisfied with the current textbook offerings. Of interest is an examination of the process of textbook selection and the choice criteria used. Overwhelmingly, author generated characteristics were found to be used by faculty members in the selection of textbooks

Are Publishers Immune From the Marketing Concept: An Empirical Investigation of Student Textbook Retention

Textbooks have been ignored in the application of the marketing concept to higher education, despite the fact that they are an important component of the product offering. This study suggests that students feel that their textbooks are meeting their needs, but that need satisfaction does not affect textbook retention. The decision to keep or sell textbooks appears to be largely a function of the perceived value and relevance of the book and the manner in which presents material

The Activities, Roles, and Relationships of Successful First-Generation College Students

This qualitative study describes the experiences of 16 successful first-generation college students (FGCS) utilizing a theoretical lens, informed significantly by bioecological systems theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1979), which guided our qualitative analyses of interview transcripts to examine the activities, roles, and relationships of these students as they approached the finish line of college graduation. We responded to an omission in the literature on FGCS experiences: although researchers have examined the struggles of first-generation and low-income students, few studies have focused on the experiences of successful students. We offer a developmental paradigm for appreciating undergraduate retention. Recommendations from this investigation support the development and implementation of proactive retention and degree-completion strategies from a strengths-based perspective

Integrated Models of Care for Individuals with Opioid Use Disorder: How Do We Prevent HIV and HCV?

Purpose of Review To describe models of integrated and co-located care for opioid use disorder (OUD), hepatitis C (HCV), and HIV. Recent Findings The design and scale-up of multidisciplinary care models that engage, retain, and treat individuals with HIV, HCV, and OUD are critical to preventing continued spread of HIV and HCV. We identified 17 models within primary care (N = 3), HIV specialty care (N = 5), opioid treatment programs (N = 6), transitional clinics (N = 2), and community-based harm reduction programs (N = 1), as well as two emerging models. Summary Key components of such models are the provision of (1) medication-assisted treatment for OUD, (2) HIV and HCV treatment, (3) HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, and (4) behavioral health services. Research is needed to understand differences in effectiveness between co-located and fully integrated care, combat the deleterious racial and ethnic legacies of the “War on Drugs,” and inform the delivery of psychiatric care. 2019 Workforce Assessment of Michigans Local and Regional Food System

This report is the first in a series summarizing a 2019 workforce assessment of Michigan's local and regional food system. The local and regional food system can be defined in a number of ways. For the purposes of this study, the local and regional food systems encompass organizations that produce, process, or distribute food from Michigan that is available to Michigan consumers, and/or organizations that support this system.The research included: a scan of Michigan's food system jobs: where we collected and analyzed secondary labormarket data to identify local and regional food systems employment; demand; projected growth; median wages; and worker demographics, an employer's perspective of Michigan's local and regional food system workforce, and a scan of education and training opportunities in Michigan's local and regional food system: an inventory of education and training programs for local and regional food system jobs

The Chemical Evolution of the Galactic Bulge

This science white paper addresses the issue of discovering the chemical evolution of the Galactic bulge, from which we may learn the initial mass function at the time of the formation of the bulge, the timescale for the initial burst of star formation, any evidence supporting an extended era of star formation, evidence of very early mergers of massive subcomponents, and the fraction of its mass that was contributed by late mergers. A further immediate problem concerns the composition of dwarfs measured from microlensing events versus the abundance scale measured from giants. A companion White Paper (Clarkson & Rich) addresses a set of bulge science questions that require observations at very high angular resolution

"Any lady can do this without much trouble ...": class and gender in The dining room (1878)

Macmillan's "Art at Home" series (1876–83) was a collection of domestic advice manuals. Mentioned in every study of the late-nineteenth-century domestic interior, they have often been interpreted, alongside contemporary publications such as Charles Eastlake's Hints on Household Taste (1868), as indicators of late 1870s home furnishing styles. Mrs Loftie's The Dining Room (1878) was the series' fifth book and it considers one of the home's principal (and traditionally masculine) domestic spaces. Recent research on middle-class cultural practices surrounding food has placed The Dining Room within the tradition of Mrs Beeton's Household Management (1861); however, it is not a cookery book and hardly mentions dinners. Drawing upon unpublished archival sources, this paper charts the production and reception of The Dining Room, aiming to unravel its relationships with other contemporary texts and to highlight the difficulties of using it as historical evidence. While it offers fascinating insights into contemporary taste, class and gender, this paper suggests that, as an example of domestic design advice literature, it reveals far more about the often expedient world of nineteenth-century publishing practices
